The Coulwood Swim Club is the
home of the Barracudas Swim Team - one of Charlotte's oldest and most well
established summer swim league programs. Formed shortly after the swim club
opened in 1962, the Barracudas invite all kids 5-18 to join.
Swimmers compete by age group
with teams from neighboring communities. The emphasis of the program is, fun
and the meets are a great way to spend a summer
evening with family and friends. As part of the YbDry Swim League, the
Barracudas’ vision is to inspire and enable our kids to achieve excellence
through their efforts to achieve their personal best in the sport of
swimming...and in life. Our mission is to provide a community-based
youth program designed to promote an organized and disciplined swim team
experience that encourages participation.
Don’t know the strokes? Don’t worry. Our
coaches teach all strokes: freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and
breaststroke. And they do a good job. The Barracudas have a long history of
developing swimmers and winning meets.
Never been on a swim team before? It
doesn’t matter. The Barracudas are open to everyone. There are no
tryouts...no cuts. Our goal is to introduce the sport to those who otherwise
may not discover the benefits of swimming. We protect the dignity of
young and less experienced swimmers while striving to improve their skills
and enhance the skills of more experienced swimmers, enabling all to reach
their personal best.
The season begins in May and
ends in July. Practice is usually held Monday - Thursday evenings at the
swim club, and depending on the League schedule, meets are held one night a
week. Priority registration and discount fees are available with Coulwood
Swim Club membership. Sign-ups begin in May. Watch for notices.
The children will be divided into practice
groups based upon ability and age as of May 31, 2010. Practices will be
offered 4 to 8 times a week depending on the age of the child. The team will
swim in 6 to 7 meets per summer, usually starting in early June and
finishing with an All-Star Meet in early to mid July. We offer numerous
social opportunities for the children to bond as a team and build
friendships such as senior team nights, bowling, movie night, ice cream
parties, and breakfasts of champions. The swim team is managed by a
parent-led board, the Swim Team Advisory Board (STAB). More detailed

Coulwood Swim Team once again
plans to participate in the YBDry swim League for 2010. The teams this year
will be Coulwood, Oakdale, Northwoods, Mt. Island Harbor, and Overlook. The
swim meets will start in mid June and end around the middle of July. The age brackets
for the events are 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-18 for boys and girls.
